Is Your Face Mask Doing More Harm Than Good?

coronavirus

Could the mask you’re wearing increase your risk of coronavirus? Scientists at Duke University in North Carolina tested 14 different types of face-coverings and found that one of them — a neck fleece — actually increases your risk of coronavirus infection.

A bandana was the second worst-performing face-covering but it did not increase the risk of infection, while a knitted covering was third worst. The most effective face-covering in the study was a fitted N95 mask without valves — the hospital-grade coverings that are used by frontline health care workers.

A surgical mask performed second best while a polypropylene mask came in third and handmade cotton face coverings also performed well. Duke University researcher Martin Fischer, said he wanted to emphasize the importance of wearing masks, but he also wanted people to “wear masks that actually work.”
