Tattoos have moved beyond body art to become what some call a life-saving art, in the form of a wearable sensor that can be tattooed on the body to give vital health information. The concept is being developed by The Centre for Nanoscience and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science.
While they don’t interfere with the daily activities of the user, the sensors enable continuous monitoring of vital signs such as pulse rate, respiration rate, UV rays exposure, skin hydration level and glucose monitoring.
The tattoo sensor is about 20 micrometers thick, has a remarkably fast response and can be patterned into any shape and size using a laser. Developers say it doesn’t interfere with the daily activities of the user and has the potential to replace rigid and bulky health monitoring devices that are normally used in medical facilities.
