EU to Hold COVID Vax Makers Liable, US Indemnifies

coronavirus

The European Union is not going to be as easy on COVID-19 vaccine makers as the U.S. is, and plans to hold them liable for hidden defects or other problems the vaccines might cause once they’re released to the public.

“Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) raised the topic in a discussion with DG SANTE Deputy Director-General Sandra Gallina earlier this week,” the Regulatory Affairs Professional Society (RAPS) reported. “While the U.S. government has agreed to be liable for the vaccines, the EU has proven less willing to shift responsibility away from manufacturers.”

EU members have been expressing concerns that deals with vaccine makers could shift responsibility and legal liability away from the makers, but “’The companies are fully liable. There is no change. It is the system that we know. We would not be so mad as to change such a system,’ Gallina said during the debate in Parliament.”
