The Only Children Who Died of COVID-19 Were Already Seriously Ill

No child who was not already profoundly ill has died of Covid-19 in Britain, according to a study that looked at 260 hospitals in England, Wales and Scotland.

From the beginning, it’s been said that the coronavirus has little impact on children and the Liverpool University study confirms that, while shedding a lot more light on how Covid-19 affects children.

Among the 260 hospitals, 69,516 patients were admitted with COVID-19 symptoms, including 651 under age 19 and 225 under 12 months. Serious underlying medical conditions were present in 42% of the children, but no child without a serious comorbidity died, and neither did any child between the ages of 28 days and 15 years.

As in the adult population, male children were more at risk of being hospitalized than females and ethnic minorities were more at risk.

Fever was present in 70% of cases, but nausea or vomiting, coughing and breathing problems were not the most common symptoms. Those who were admitted to critical care were especially likely to have three symptoms: diarrhea, conjunctivitis and altered consciousness and confusion.
