Making a few lifestyle changes may be all you need to do to keep your mind sharp, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
A group of 119 individuals older than 65 years of age who were experiencing cognitive decline took part in the study and made lifestyle changes such as following a Mediterranean diet and committing to a regular exercise schedule, as well as practicing cognitive engagement.
Participants were instructed to alter their lifestyles through information given by dietitians, an exercise physiologist and online brain training. During a six-month follow up, researchers noted that participants in the intervention group were able to improve their lifestyle and had higher cognition scores than those in the control group.
The results suggest that lifestyle-based changes may help to improve cognition in older adults experiencing cognitive decline that precedes dementia.
