A new Japanese study has bad news if you’re one of those who have opted to wear plastic face shields as opposed to masks to fight COVID-19: You may think the shields are a great alternative, but they’re basically useless.
The study found that “nearly 100% of airborne droplets less than 5 micrometers in size escaped through the shields,” The Guardian reported. “In addition, about half of larger droplets measuring 50 micrometers found their way into the air.”
The team leader of the study concluded that face masks should be used instead, with a preference for those made of nonwoven fabric, rather than something made of cotton or polyester.
