Prepare for a ‘Second Wave’ of Mental Health Devastation

If the financial devastation of the pandemic shutdowns isn’t enough, new waves of emotional devastation resulting in rising mental health and substance use disorders will be even more crushing, health experts warn.

Published in JAMA Network, the dire predictions warn that “This imminent mental health surge will bring further challenges for individuals, families, and communities including increased deaths from suicide and drug overdoses. This magnitude of death over a short period of time is an international tragedy on a historic scale.”

Already, the number of Americans with anxiety is three times what it was in 2019 at this time, with nearly 41% of survey respondents reporting one or more behavioral or mental health conditions. Coupled with prolonged grief due to months of intense emotional pain, the expected second wave of physical, financial and mental devastation due to the pandemic is predicted to affect at least 2 million Americans.
