CDC: Adults Can Get the Same Post-Coronavirus Syndrome as Children

Researchers have concluded that the scary post-coronavirus syndrome that can affect children weeks after recovery can also impact adults. The condition is described as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in adults (MIS-A) and is similar to the MIS-C illness seen in children.

One of the worst effects of the coronavirus is that even after it is cleared from your system, you may be fighting COVID-like symptoms long after beating the virus.

More than 35.5 million cases of coronavirus have been confirmed worldwide so far, and more than one million people have died of COVID-19 complications. But even survivors find themselves fighting with all sorts of COVID-like symptoms long after beating the virus. The post-COVID illness has been labeled “Long COVID,” a chronic affliction that medical experts struggle to treat.

Children infected with SARS-CoV-2 run the risk of developing a secondary syndrome weeks later called MIS-C that can be fatal if they also suffer from underlying conditions, or sometimes even for children who are otherwise healthy. Young adults and older adults might also experience the secondary syndrome, in their case called MIS-A, which could require intensive care or even be fatal.

MIS-A includes “cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, dermatologic and neurologic symptoms,” which explains the inclusion of “multisystem” in the condition’s name. The symptoms appeared two to five weeks after coronavirus in patients who reported COVID-19 symptoms before the onset of MIS-A.
