The Supreme Court of the United States ruled just before Thanksgiving that putting COVID restrictions on religious services violates the constitutional right to freedom of religion. While it was a split (5-4) decision, the majority ruling struck down executive orders by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who had put attendance restrictions on services in synagogues and churches.
“Both the Diocese and Agudath Israel alleged that limiting occupancy for churches and synagogues to 10 to 25 people singled out and treated houses of worship in certain sections of New York much more harshly than comparable secular facilities like retail stores, which violated the Free Exercise clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,” said Barbara Loe Fisher, co-founder and president of the National Vaccine Information Center.
A similar case is also headed to the SCOTUS involving restrictions in New Jersey.
