England’s deputy chief medical officer, Jonathan Van-Tam, said in a news conference December 3, 2020, that if everyone who is on the priority list takes the COVID-19 vaccine “as fast” as they can at the “highest volume” possible, he thinks COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths could drop by as much as 99%.
He buffered his impressive positive outlook with an admission that “there would need to be some flexibility” in that list. Cold storage specifications for the vaccine prohibit home visits for vaccinations, Van-Tam said, but hospitals will be first in line for vaccination centers.
Health care staff and hospital patients will get their shots in that setting, first, with elderly people in long-term care homes and care home staff being next.
