The University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) has an enormous amount of power when it comes to global health policy, and it played a big part in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, besides the fact that the IHME made a lot of mistakes in those days, what most people don’t realize is that it’s funded with $600 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — paving the way for Gates to practically run a global health monopoly through the IHME, along with the World Health Organization.
The problem with this, according to The Nation, is that it’s made it possible for IHME to “play by a different set of rules from the rest of the scientific community” and to surround itself “with a constellation of high-profile allies that have made it too big to peer review, the traditional method of self-regulation in science.”
