Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Dr. Anthony Fauci has been vacillating on the number of people needed to be vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity against the virus. Lately, he’s moved the bar higher and higher a rung at a time, and is now saying 90% of people will need to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity.
Earlier in the pandemic, he’d indicated that the herd immunity number was as low as 60%. So, which is it? Amazingly, in an interview with The New York Times, he admitted that he was raising the bar incrementally based on polls reporting what percentage of Americans are willing to take the vaccine.
Specifically, he said: "When polls said only about half of all Americans would take a vaccine, I was saying herd immunity would take 70 to 75 percent" … adding "Then, when newer surveys said 60 percent or more would take it, I thought, ‘I can nudge this up a bit,’ so I went to 80, 85."
And then the kicker: He also admitted that he doesn’t even know what the real number is; he’s just throwing out numbers by gauging what he thinks would be a number that won’t discourage Americans.
