COVID-19 has touched every corner of the world, but despite a vaccine, it will never go away. Not only that, a bigger pandemic could be coming, according Dr. Mike Ryan, head of the World Health Organization’s emergencies program.
Because of the nature of the virus, SARS-CoV-2 will always be around, along with social distancing and mask wearing, WHO’s chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan added. “I don’t believe we have the evidence on any of the vaccines to be confident that it’s going to prevent people from actually getting the infection and therefore being able to pass it on,” Swaminathan said.
And just in case people were wondering when current lockdown measures might end, Swaminathan predicted that it will be the end of 2021 before “population immunity” will have become high enough to consider an easing of restrictions.
