Grandparents Give Advice for Surviving Pandemic

Grandparents have some sage advice for surviving the pandemic. Grandparents age 58 to 77 were polled by James Bates, associate professor and extension specialist in family wellness at The Ohio State University, who narrowed the results down to four points:

  1. Be present by focusing on the little things — Find other ways to show your grandchildren affection instead of hugging and kissing. Little gifts, little activities and little remembrances like cards, letters and video or phone calls are all positive things you can do.
  2. Don’t feel sorry for yourself — Show a positive and courageous front even when you’re not feeling too upbeat.
  3. Be an example for your grandkids — Let them know that the pandemic is tough on everyone, including parents and grandparents, and be an example of strength, resiliency and hope.
  4. Help them prepare for the future — Talk to your grandchildren about difficult times in your life and how you overcame them.

“Kids need to learn how to deal with frustrations and loss and challenges,” Bates said. “Strong and supportive relationships with loving family members such as grandparents are essential to helping children get through the challenges of life.”
