The number of possible side effects of coronavirus keeps growing and, now, erectile dysfunction (ED) has made the list.
A Cleveland Clinic study shows that among men who have had coronavirus, three factors can lead to the potential onset of ED, including:
- Vascular effects — COVID-19 can cause hyperinflammation throughout the body, especially in the heart and surrounding muscles and since the vascular system and reproductive system are connected, the blood supply to the penis can become blocked or narrowed.
- Psychological impact — Mental health and sexuality go hand in hand and researchers note that the stress, anxiety and depression caused by the pandemic can be linked to sexual dysfunction.
- Overall health deterioration — ED is typically a symptom of an underlying problem; thus, men with poor health are at greater risk for developing ED and also for having a severe reaction to COVID-19.
Researchers also discovered that potential testicular damage may occur following an infection with COVID-19 and it’s too early to know if the damage is permanent, temporary or if it can affect fertility.
