Scientists are continuing to detect emergent mutant strains of SARS-CoV-2, with genetic variants that ever-changing.
While all viruses use mutations to survive and replicate, the findings with the coronavirus are troubling to researchers eager to find a vaccine that could help end the pandemic. Scientists were heartened to learn that Moderna’s vaccine may still be effective against the mutants, albeit possibly “not as strong or prolonged.”
In the meantime, health professionals advise citizens to continue washing their hands, social distancing and wearing masks.
