As the COVID-19 vaccines roll out, reports of deaths after vaccination have been popping up around the U.S. However, infectious disease specialists caution that deaths occur in certain situations anyway, and people should be wary of attributing death after a vaccine to the vaccine.
For example, nursing home residents are often older and frail, which would put them in danger of dying even without a vaccine. "The question really is, do [these deaths] occur at a greater rate in the vaccinated population than they do in the general population?” William Schaffner, professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told Yahoo! News.
Government agencies such as the CDC are monitoring reported reactions to the COVID-19 vaccines and, so far, they have not attributed “a single death” to the vaccines, Yahoo! News said.
