FDA and CDC officials are looking into reports of blood clotting disorders occurring in patients who have received a COVID vaccine.
In one case the disorder was reported in connection with a Florida doctor’s death in January after he received Pfizer’s vaccine. In another, a woman was hospitalized with the disorder after receiving the Moderna vaccine. In both instances the victims suffered thrombocytopenia, or lack of platelets.
While the investigation is ongoing, Pfizer said preliminarily that they “have not been able to establish a causal association” with the Vaccine. On the other hand, a hematologist at Weill Cornell Medicine, Dr. James Bussel, told The New York Times he believes it’s “possible that there is an association.”
Bussel and a colleague have identified at least 15 vaccine recipients who have had similar issues.
