A 37-year-old surgeon died February 8, 2021, after receiving his COVID-19 vaccine. Health officials said he may be the first adult case of someone who had a delayed immune response to the vaccine after having a natural COVID infection.
The reaction to the vaccine causes multi-system inflammation in the blood vessels and is most common in children. It occurs days, weeks or even months after a natural infection. The surgeon was not aware that he’d had COVID, as he’d tested negative several times.
However, he did have antibodies to COVID, which indicated he’d been infected. Officials said they are still gathering information on his death and that this is “not a reason to not get the vaccine.”
