China Bans BBC After Reporting on COVID Lab Leak

Summary by Cindy Olmstead

China has banned BBC World News and revoked its license for violating China’s requirements to only publish “true and impartial” news generated in China.

According to The Guardian, the Chinese government has not been happy with BBC’s reportage on the COVID pandemic and a series of social and religious topics that haven’t put the Chinese government in a positive light. For example, Chinese authorities called a BBC report on sexual assault and torture “wholly without factual basis” and “false information.”

A YouTube presentation by BBC’s John Sudworth just before the BBC ban also talked about the possibility that the virus leaked from a lab in Wuhan.

China also was upset that the Britain’s communication watchdog, Ofcom, had revoked the broadcast license for China’s English language channel, CGTN, The Guardian said.
