A push by gender identity activists in the Brighton-Sussex are of the United Kingdom has succeeded in renaming breastfeeding to chestfeeding. Other previously gender-based terms such as “mother” and “maternity services” will also be replaced with the words “birthing parent” and “parental services.”
Additionally, a Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust policy document redefines breastmilk, woman and father to terms that are “more inclusive language,” The Times reports.
In a memo, the NHS said they recognize that “there is currently biological essentialism and transphobia present within elements of mainstream birth narratives and discourse … Acknowledging the cultural context in which service development occurs is vital in making trans and non-binary lives safer.”
