Nanomaterials: The Invisible Danger Lurking in Consumer Products

Summary by Cindy Olmstead

Nanotechnology is used in many ways: treating and eradicating diseases; producing materials that are 100 times stronger than steel and solar panels that double the energy output of older ones; skin care products that purportedly keep you looking younger; batteries that last 10 times longer than before; and more.

However, for all the good things it’s said to provide, there is a downside to nanotechnology — the nanomaterials used in these innovative and life-changing technologies remain unregulated.  You will not find them listed on the ingredient labels of common consumer products, in spite of the fact that a new study shows they eventually enter our food chain and can penetrate cells and accumulate in our organs, especially the brain.

"It could be that you are already using nanomaterials in your food, clothes, cosmetic products, etc., but you still don't see any mention of them in the ingredient list. Why? Because they are still unregulated and because they are so small that we simply can't measure them once they're in your products," said lead study author Dr. Fazel A. Monikh from the University of Eastern Finland.

"People have the right to know what they are using and buying for their families. This is a global problem which needs a global solution. Many questions about nanomaterials still need to be answered.”
