This Week’s BMJ Poll Asks an Ambiguous Vaccine Question

Summary by Cindy Olmstead

coronavirus

The weekly poll for The BMJ wants to know: “Should spreading anti-vaccine misinformation be criminalized?”

It’s a YES-or-NO answer, but the question is ambiguous in that it doesn’t explain what “anti”-vaccine means, or how “misinformation” is interpreted. What, exactly, does “anti-vaccine” entail? And, what is “misinformation,” especially when the information in the medical literature is constantly changing?

And, what do they mean by “criminalized?” Does it mean a misdemeanor and a fine? Or do they want a felony charge with a trial by jury and possibly jail or prison?

The poll is open with no need for a password to access the site, so anyone not only can vote, but can see the current tally — which, by the way, as of this writing was 79.04% for “NO” and 20.96% for YES.
