Among all the societal side effects of the pandemic, one stunning social factor stands out among people ages 18 to 31: A whopping 31% of them relocated between 2020 and 2021.
Overall, only 16% of adults moved, which shows that the younger generation was the driving factor in who chose to pick and go somewhere else. Thirty-two percent of those aged 18 to 24 moved somewhere else, while 10% of those ages 41 to 56 moved. Only 5% of baby boomers moved.
Reasons that the younger people gave for moving were:
- 31% wanted to be closer to friends and family
- 27% said it was due to “affordability”
- 21% moved for a job
- 18% said they needed more space
- 17% left because of a “newfound ability to work from anywhere
Of the cities where people left, Manhattan led the exodus pack, followed by Houston, Austin, Orlando and Dallas. Interestingly, those who moved in the South often only went 15 to 30 miles away.
