A Virginia man got the one-dose Johnson & Johnson in early March and days later found himself hospitalized, where his doctors confirmed his reaction was a direct result of the shot. Richard Terrell of Goochland County said he felt perfectly fine after getting the vaccine, but developed symptoms four days later, including a severe, bright red rash that spread over his entire body. He said his skin was stinging, burning, itching and very painful.
The 74-year-old was admitted to the hospital and spent five days at VCU Medical Center, where his doctors confirmed Terrell’s reaction was a direct result of the shot. As he continues to recover at home, Terrell said he is still very weak and that it will take some time for him to fully recover. “It all just happened so fast. My skin peeled off … It’s still coming off on my hands now.”
One of Terrell’s doctors, dermatology hospitalist Dr. FNU Nutan, determined that it was a drug reaction and said it could have been life-threatening if untreated. Nutan and her colleagues believe Terrell’s reaction is somehow related to his genetic makeup and the vaccine type, explaining that Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are mRNAs and Johnson & Johnson is a vector viral.
