Mask Recall Launched; Other Masks Under Investigation

Summary by Cindy Olmstead

After taking a closer look at symptoms complaints about masks being worn by Quebec workers, Health Canada reports that while the masks “weren’t subject to strict regulation at first,” they are now scrutinizing the masks’ safety.

A public citizen alerted them to possible dangers of the masks, who said they were “experiencing strange symptoms from wearing them.” Symptoms included headaches and feelings like they were breathing in cat hair, CTV News said.

After a scientific assessment of the masks, Health Canada determined that they contain tiny nanoparticles graphene coatings that are supposed to block the virus, but also can be inhaled. The initial investigation looked at just one brand of mask, but Health Canada said a second one may be in question as well.

“It’s known that some of the very tiniest nanoparticles — by no means all of them — can damage the lungs and other organs if people inhale them over the long term,” one expert told CTV.
