Slow Walkers Nearly Four Times More Likely To Die From COVID

Summary by Cindy Olmstead

A U.K. University of Leicester study found people who walk at a slow pace are 3.75 times more likely to die from coronavirus, especially if they are obese.

People of normal weight need to pick up the pace, as well. Even slim people who walk slowly are nearly two and a half times more likely to get a severe COVID infection. In addition, people of normal weight are more vulnerable to getting COVID than obese people who walk fast, according to researchers.

Gait speed is already used by scientists as a common measurement for testing physical fitness and to   predict a person’s risk of future disease and mortality. The CDC has listed obesity as a risk factor for COVID, but this research shows that walking speed is also a risk factor.
