In March a teacher in Italy died from a blood clot after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, and now her family wants to know if the shot played a part in the 44-year-old woman’s death. They’ve filed a petition with the courts, seeking an answer.
European health officials acknowledge receiving more than 350 reports of blood clots in people who have received this vaccine, but they have yet to connect the reports definitively with the vaccine, The Wall Street Journal says.
While AstraZeneca declined to discuss specific cases, the drug company did say it was “working with regulators to further probe the blood-clotting issues.” And, the WSJ added, “Most governments, as well as AstraZeneca, say the vaccine’s benefits, including protection against death and severe Covid-19, strongly outweigh any risks, and that Covid-19 remains the far greater threat to lives.”
AstraZeneca plans to seek an emergency use authorization (EUA) for the vaccine in the U.S. soon.
