Experts: Menstrual Changes Are ‘Normal’ With the COVID Vaccine

Summary by Cindy Olmstead

If you’ve gotten the COVID vaccine and are experiencing concerning menstrual changes, experts say not to worry: Women have more “robust” responses to the vaccines and, thus, the menstrual changes could just be a normal part of your immune system doing its job.

Experts from the Center for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research interviewed by CTV stopped short of saying the vaccines actually cause the changes, however. Rather, Dr. Jerilynn Prior, professor of endocrinology, said some women may just be associating changes that were already occurring in their bodies with having received the shot.

The changes also could occur due to stress from the pandemic itself or even a sudden relief from that stress, Liisa Galea, professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia, said.

“That doesn’t mean it doesn’t need studying, but I don't understand a physiology that would explain it,” Prior added.
