Pfizer Banking on Children to Help Hit Record-Breaking Revenues

In a barely-noticed news blip May 4, 2021, Pfizer released its latest earnings statement with a projection that, once its mRNA COVID-19 vaccine is approved for children, its sales will make it the company’s largest-selling product ever, at a projected $26 billion.

So far, Pfizer has shipped 430 million doses of the vaccine to 91 countries and counting — the company has contracts for 1.6 billion doses to be delivered in 2021. They expect to manufacture a total of 2.5 billion doses in 2021. Their plans, according to a transcript of the company’s quarterly earnings meeting, are to “be a long-term partner to health authorities around the world in their ongoing efforts to combat COVID-19.”

Multiyear contracts with multiple countries will help them reach that goal — and once reports from their clinical trials for children as young as 6 months and pregnant women are released, the record-breaking revenues will follow.

The company is also counting on a successful trial in which a 20-valent pneumococcal vaccine for adults will be co-administered with the COVID vaccine. Other ventures are in the works, too, including gene therapies, and “if things go well,” the approvals for all these plans could occur as early as the end of 2021.
