A fourth grader in the Martin County, Florida, school district showed school leaders exactly what hypocrisy is when he spoke before the board before they voted on their continuing mask policy.
In the end, the board ruled wearing masks inside the schools is still mandatory through the end of the year, but after that they will be optional, including for graduation ceremonies and summer school.
The vote came after a slew of parents and students voiced their opposition to the continued mandatory rule. One 10-year-old described how wearing a mask during PE and track made him feel tired, and sometimes it gives him “a really bad headache.”
The rules don’t make sense, he said, such as not being allowed to face each other at lunch or to sip drinks while they wait in line for their parents to pick them up after school. It’s especially confusing because while the students aren’t allowed to take their masks off at all, they see teachers taking their masks down to drink their own drinks and to “yell” at students.
He said he ran into his teacher outside of school and she didn’t even recognize him because she had never seen him without his mask. “But I knew it was her because she sits at her desk a lot without a mask on,” the young orator said.
“I asked my mom if there is a word for this and she said there is: hypocrisy.”
