Professionals Accuse CDC of Making False Claims on Fluoridated Water

Even though 97% of European countries don’t add fluoride to their drinking water, municipal water systems across the U.S. continue to use it — and 112 professionals are accusing the CDC of promoting it by ignoring the science and making false claims about its purported “benefits.”

In a press release Fluoride Action Network’s (FAN) director, Paul Connett, Ph.D., said, “It is an embarrassment for the USA to be perceived by the rest of the world as being willing to risk our children’s brains for anything let alone a highly questionable benefit to their teeth. The CDC’s Oral Health Division should not have put us in this horrible position.”

CDC’s Oral Health Division officials have denied for decades that water fluoridation causes harm, despite studies that show fluoride exposure can damage both fetal and infant brains, the press release says.

In their letter to CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the 112 professionals recommend pausing further promotion of fluoride by the CDC; that the CDC issue an immediate warning to pregnant women and mothers of bottle-fed infants to avoid fluoride; that they investigate the latest science pertaining to fluoride’s effects on the brain and other tissues; and that they confine their oral health promotions to correlate with “successful methods used in countries which do not use water fluoridation, including the ChildSmile program in Scotland.”
