Saying COVID-19 demonstrated a need for universal, electronic identification systems, the European Union unveiled a new digital wallet that can carry not only your health information, but all of your financial details as well as your professional credits and licensing.
From driver’s license numbers to medical documentation, the digital “wallet” would be accessible electronically anywhere in the world. The information would be a “secure and transparent” means of quickly ascertaining your personal background and financial status, according to Margrethe Vestager, EU commissioner.
Potential uses for the wallet include such things as documentation to rent a car, open a bank account, sign a lease, enroll in school or travel out of the country. So far, the wallets are not mandatory. News articles made no mention of how the wallet and accessible information in it — such as bank accounts — would be completely safe from data breaches or theft.
