Why Are We so Focused on Vaccine-Induced Immunity?

The range of reduction of reinfection from COVID-19 was between 82% and 95% among six studies that encompassed nearly 1 million people — indicating COVID infection gives you natural immunity, so why are officials ignoring that? two medical professionals ask in an op-ed published in MedPage Today.

“Those who have recovered have an astonishingly low frequency of repeat infection, disease or death … [and] that immunity protects many people now where vaccines are not yet available,” according to Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a former CDC medical officer and current clinical professor of preventive medicine at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles, and Dr. Noah Kojima, an internal medicine resident at University of California Los Angeles.

The FDA issued a public safety communication May 19, 2021, stating that antibody tests should not be used to determine immunity or protection against COVID-19 — a very confusing statement, according to Klausner and Kojima. Both doctors argue that people with natural immunity should be allowed to return to normal activities just as the vaccinated are.

Klausner and Kojima also question why antibody testing should not be used to determine immunity or protection against COVID-19. Natural immunity as determined by an accurate and reliable antibody test or the documentation of prior infection (previous positive PCR or antigen test) should be evidence of immunity equal to that of vaccination, Klausner and Kojima said.
