World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is walking back his praise of China for its handling of the COVID crisis and his previous objections to the idea that SARS-CoV-2 could have originated from a lab leak.
Admitting he’d been “too hasty” in ruling out the lab leak theory, he added that he knows from his personal experience as an immunologist that “lab accidents happen.” In an effort to get to the bottom of it, he and the United Nations have asked China to be transparent and cooperate with an investigation of raw data from the early days of the pandemic.
In response, “China has struck back aggressively, arguing that attempts to link the origins of COVID-19 to a lab are politically motivated and has suggested that the outbreak might have started abroad,” News Nation reported. “At WHO’s annual meeting of health ministers in the spring, China said that the future search for COVID-19’s origins should continue — in other countries.”
