Australia Cancels Top Tennis Player’s Visa

The world’s top men’s tennis player, Novak Djokovic, won’t be playing in the Australian Open after Australia refused to honor his vaccination exemption.

Two independent medical panels approved by the organizers granted Djokovic the exemption, but he was held at the airport and sent to a detention hotel. He’s challenging the decision, but Australia appears ready to deport him after a special hearing on the matter.

In the meantime supporters are rallying around the hotel where he’s being detained. “Former Australian Open tournament director Paul McNamee told local media the visa U-turn was unprecedented, saying it ‘smells’ of politics,” BBC reported.
