In its 37-page, April 2022 Scientific Integrity report, GAO says it not only found multiple examples of political interferences in all four agencies it investigated, but also no structure or organization to prevent and/or report such instances.
The agencies GAO investigated were: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health and the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response.
“The four agencies GAO reviewed do not have procedures that define political interference in scientific decision-making or describe how it should be reported and addressed,” the GAO says in its report. They add that employees at the agencies said they were afraid to report political inferences because they were either unsure of how to report it, or they feared retaliation for reporting it.
