WHO Adviser: Sex at 2 Raves ‘Likely’ Spread Monkeypox

The outbreak of monkeypox in Europe was likely caused  by “risky sexual behavior” at two raves held there, according to Dr. David Heymann, former head of the World Health Organization’s emergencies department.

The raves were held in Spain and Belgium, where the transmission most likely occurred among gay and bisexual men who engaged in sex at the events.

In response to the outbreak, “Heymann chaired an urgent meeting of WHO’s advisory group on infectious disease threats … to assess the ongoing epidemic,” Fox 59 News reported. In response, the WHO’s Europe director said the disease may have been spreading silently for “some time,” and that it’s possible it may accelerate as summer begins.
