Study: 47% of New Drugs Cost $150,000 or More

A study published in the June 7, 2022, issue of JAMA has triggered calls to Congress to rein in the high cost of obtaining new drugs, some of which cost upward of $150,000 a month for sick persons who desperately need them.

Researchers found that between 2008 and 2021, launch prices for new drugs increased by 20% a year, exponentially, with median prices skyrocketing from $2,115 a year to a staggering $180,007 in 2021, The Defender said.

The reason for the shooting prices is because U.S. drug companies “freely set prices after approval,” resulting in far higher costs than those seen in Canada, Germany, France and other wealthy nations.
