In the Trash: Lack of Demand Is Causing Disposal of Pediatric COVID Shots

When it comes to the COVID jabs for kids under 5, parents simply aren’t buying them, even if they’re free. Only 3.83 percent of American children age 6 months to 5 years had received at least one dose of the jabs as of August 3, 2022.

In fact, according to The Boston Globe, so few parents are bringing their children in for the shots that many of the doses are ending up in the garbage because the 10-dose containers expire in 12 hours after opening.

One pediatrician told the Globe that some parents are reluctant to agree to the shots because the risk and mortality for COVID in children is so low. But, the pediatrician said, doctors can remedy that problem head-on by reassuring parents that the shots are safe and that their children’s risk can be even lower if they take them.
