Would You Eat Fake Fish From a Lab?

Not to be outdone by fake meat created in a petri dish, scientists have now conjured up fake fish with cells cultivated in a lab. Proponents of the sea-less seafood say that if the idea catches on, it could help solve the world’s problems of overfishing and worries about contamination, while at the same time addressing food insecurities and shortages worldwide.

The production begins by scraping a few cells from a real fish and allowing them to grow in the lab. The resulting product wouldn’t be a fish but select components of both fatty and lean parts of the species being grown.

Predicting dire consequences if the world doesn’t embrace fake foods like this, proponents of the franken fish told The Guardian “Cruelty-free cell-cultivated seafood is a solution to the seafood industry’s many environmental problems.”

Skeptics, on the other hand, say they doubt “that cell-based seafood companies will make a difference for fisheries and ocean conservation.”
