Moderna Gets Approval for mRNA Jab for Respiratory Syncytial Virus

In a win for its mRNA gene therapy technology used for its COVID-19 jabs, Moderna announced that the FDA has now granted a breakthrough-therapy designation for its respiratory syncytial virus.

According to MarketWatch, “breakthrough-therapy designation aims to expedite the development and review of a drug for serious conditions when preliminary clinical evidence shows the drug may show substantial improvement over available therapies.”

Currently, the designation would apply only to those age 60 and older with RSV lower respiratory tract disease. Moderna said the FDA granted the designation based on an 83.7% efficacy rate.
