Flavored Vapes Cause Unseen Threats

The rising use of electronic cigarettes (ECIGs) among youth and young adults is a significant public health issue. The ingredients in ECIGs have been linked to negative health effects, including respiratory inflammation and oxidative stress. Flavorings such as menthol, strawberry, vanillin, and cinnamon contribute to the toxicity of ECIG aerosols, causing respiratory issues.

A recent study examined the link between ECIG use and respiratory health issues among 18,925 participants. The focus was on the occurrence of nocturnal dry cough and its association with flavored ECIGs. The analysis revealed that current users of fruit-flavored ECIGs had a 40% higher risk of reporting nocturnal dry cough compared to non-ECIG users.

These findings highlight the urgent need for more research to understand the short-term and long-term health impacts of ECIG constituents, particularly on respiratory health. The study underscores the critical importance of addressing the health risks associated with ECIG use among young people.
