A recent study found that vitamin K2 can greatly reduce how often, how severe, and how long nighttime leg cramps (NLCs) last in adults over 65, providing a safe and effective treatment for this common issue.
The study was a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, where participants took a daily dose of vitamin K2 and experienced noticeable relief from cramps compared to those who took a placebo. Importantly, no side effects were reported. These findings add to earlier research showing that vitamin K2 helps relieve muscle cramps for people undergoing hemodialysis.
Vitamin K2 plays an essential role in the body by guiding calcium to the bones and teeth, rather than allowing it to build up in the arteries. This process helps lower the risk of artery calcification, which supports heart health.
Additionally, vitamin K2 aids in hormone balance, which can be beneficial for people with concerns about testosterone levels or insulin sensitivity. Working alongside vitamin D and calcium, vitamin K2 also strengthens bones and supports overall skeletal health, making it especially valuable as we age.
Although vitamin K2 appeared safe in this study, people taking certain blood thinners should use it with caution due to possible interactions. The study suggests that more research is needed to examine K2’s wider benefits, including its potential to improve sleep quality and overall quality of life for those who experience chronic leg cramps.
