A new pill may soon make it easier to treat obstructive sleep apnea. In a recent trial, the drug AD109 helped people breathe better while they slept. After 26 weeks, those taking the pill had fewer blocked airways compared to people taking a placebo. Nearly one in four saw full control of their condition after a year.
AD109 is a once-daily pill that helps keep the airway muscles firm during sleep. This helps prevent the pauses in breathing that are common with sleep apnea. The pill was safe for most people and caused only mild side effects.
Right now, many people with sleep apnea use a CPAP machine, which can be hard to wear. If approved by the FDA, this pill could offer a simpler option. The company plans to apply for approval in early 2026.
