Scientists at UC Irvine may have found a way to help aging brain cells fight Alzheimer’s disease. In a recent study, they used two natural compounds — vitamin B3 (nicotinamide) and a green tea antioxidant (EGCG) — to boost brain energy and help clean out harmful proteins.
As the brain ages, it struggles to get rid of toxic waste like amyloid beta, which is linked to Alzheimer’s. But when researchers treated old brain cells with these compounds for just one day, the cells regained energy and began clearing out the damaging proteins — just like younger brain cells.
The treatment also improved how the cells handled stress and boosted other key functions. While more research is needed, including better delivery methods, the results are promising. These compounds are already available as supplements, which could make this an affordable option for future brain health support.
