Popular “magic” melamine cleaning sponges may be shedding trillions of microplastic particles into the environment each month. Even light use can release millions of tiny fibers, which may end up in food, water, and the air we breathe.
Microplastics have already been found in human lungs, hearts, brains, and even breast milk. Early research shows they may damage cells, weaken the immune system, and contribute to conditions like heart disease, dementia, and certain cancers.
Experts recommend switching to natural cleaning tools, reducing single-use plastics, and using water filters to help limit exposure. They also say manufacturers should create more durable sponges that release fewer particles.
