Idaho health officials are warning people to stay out of part of the Bruneau Arm near the Cottonwood Creek Boat Ramp after a harmful algal bloom was found. These blooms release toxins that can make people, pets, and livestock sick. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare says to avoid the water and keep animals away.
Harmful algae can appear as mats, foam, or paint-like scum and may have a strong odor. Touching the water can cause rashes, hives, eye irritation, or breathing problems. Swallowing it can lead to liver damage. Dogs are at higher risk because they may drink or lick the water. If they get exposed, wash them with clean water immediately.
Anyone who develops symptoms after contact with the water should see a doctor. Pet owners who suspect their animals are sick should contact a veterinarian. Officials stress avoiding the area until the bloom clears to protect both people and animals.
