Beef vs. Chicken — Which Is Better for Your Gut?

A small study from Spain suggests lean beef might have a smaller impact on gut bacteria than white-meat chicken. Researchers compared the effects of each meat on the gut microbiome, which supports digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune health. Both meats changed gut bacteria, but chicken meals led to a bigger drop in overall diversity and in certain helpful bacteria.

Beef had fewer downsides. It only lowered one bacterial group and even boosted Blautia, a beneficial bacteria that helps protect the gut lining and reduce inflammation. Low gut diversity has been linked to conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, heart problems, and obesity.

While more research is needed, the results hint that beef could be a better choice for gut health than chicken breast. The findings support the idea that meat quality matters and fit with diets that swap lean chicken for nutrient-rich, lower-PUFA beef.
