Deadly Valley Fever Fungus Infections Hit Record High, Officials Warn

California is seeing a surge in Valley fever, with 6,761 confirmed cases by July. That puts 2025 on track to surpass last year’s record of 12,595. The illness is caused by inhaling fungal spores from soil and is most common in Southern California and Arizona, though it also appears in other western states.

Symptoms often look like the flu or COVID-19, including cough, fever, fatigue, and night sweats. In severe cases, the infection spreads beyond the lungs, leading to meningitis and other life-threatening complications. Older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and those of Black or Filipino descent face the highest risk.

Doctors advise avoiding dusty areas, wearing N95 masks outdoors, and seeking medical care if symptoms last more than a week. While some people recover without treatment, serious cases may require antifungal medication and long-term care.
